How An External Catheter Works
How does an external catheter work? The catheter is a product designed to drain urine from a man’s bladder. Ordinarily, the thought of the internal catheter is a disturbing one, and one often associated with pain. (Though ironically catheters do not cause pain when proper directions are followed) Nevertheless, the external catheter provides a sigh of relief to many men who dislike the idea of sticking anything inside their penile hole.
This type of catheter looks and operates like a condom, hence the reference to an “external” product. Most men don’t mind putting condoms on, and hence would have a much easier time coping with urinary incontinence, prostate recovery, and various other health problems. These condoms connect to a drainage bag that is tied onto a man’s leg. The catheter, like a condom, is only to be worn once. However, the time period is about 24 hours. After that, the external catheter is replaced. The drainage bag can be washed, though some may prefer to simply buy new bags, as they are fairly inexpensive. (more…)
